Tour Number Four...
8 April 2024

Left Travellers Rest 1pm

Travelled north on coast road to Butlers Centre

road, past Sunnybrae, Camerons property and

on to the Viola waste management facility with

a warm welcome and a knowledgable explana-

tory tour of the area from Paul Jefferson.

It was great to see stalwart Lion Sam Campbell as guest of the day.

The tour moved on to the Bluff where Kim Shepard shared the story of his Dad's admiration of Edward John Eyre.

Emigrating from England for reasons of health, Eyre reached Australia in March 1833. As a sheep farmer he became a pioneer “overlander,” driving stock from Sydney to Adelaide. He explored the desert northwest of Adelaide and then (June 1840–July 1841) made an extremely hazardous journey around the Great Australian Bight.

The memorial plaque, installed by his Dad on the property marks the camp site of Eyre on his travels. Kim related a short version of Eyre's history and his exploration of Australia, north and north west of The Bluff, the Great Australian Bight and of his service as a magistrate and protector of Aborigines, whose language and customs he learned before returning to England.

The convoy tour then moved on to the Port Neil Quarry where Dylan provided a very interesting commentary of the quarry, the huge pieces of equipmewnt and bacjground to the history of the quarry and the rock that were being crushed.

An amazing undertaking producing tonnes and tonnes of road base, gravel and stone every day.

From the Port Neil quarry some intrepid Lions ventured into Port Neil and the pub....where the lights were out!

But the new propritors of the pub with true pioneering hospitality and generosity had the candles burning, the beer was cold and the nibbles plentiful.

All in all a great day.

Why not join the next tour on the first monday of May.

Thanks to Dave Pearson, Convenor.

Tour Number Two...

Another great monthly tour...Taking in a special invitation to see the workimngs of the Cave Quary. Host at the quarry, Jacob Cave was a wealth of knowledge and provided a most informative explanation of the workings of the quarry, the blasting, crushing and sizing with a very impressive quarry crusher machine.

The small group of Tumby Bay members was joined by Peter and Noeline Rawlin from Seaforth Lions who were visiting Tumby.

Brian Calderwood took over the lead as the convoy moved to Calderwood's shearing shed. Another hive of activity before a excursion to a disused graphite mine. Genial host Brian led the way for a couple of the more adventerous into the mine shaft.

The tour completed the circuit along the top of the range before ending back at Travellers Rest.
